Shingu / Wakayama (Japan)
Located on the western bank of the Kumano River’s mouth, Shingu is a historic city that flourished as a bustling gateway to Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of the Kumano Sanzan. Historically, it also served as a vital hub for the timber trade, utilizing the river’s currents for transportation.
Today, Shingu is an ideal base for exploring a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visitors can walk the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, pay their respects at the sacred Kumano Sanzan shrines, and witness the awe-inspiring majesty of Nachi Falls, Japan’s tallest single-tiered waterfall.
